Visit of Interns to NAPA

The visit to the National Academy of Prison Administration (NAPA) was an eye-opening experience for the participants. NAPA plays a pivotal role in training prison staff, particularly senior officials and parole officers, with a focus on correctional practices and inmate rehabilitation. The session emphasized compliance with international standards, such as the Geneva Convention, to ensure the humane treatment of inmates.
During the visit, the complexity of the rehabilitation process was discussed, highlighting the collaborative effort required from multidisciplinary professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and prison management. The decentralization of prison management in Pakistan also came under scrutiny. It was noted that while the federal government has delegated prison management to provincial authorities, this has led to discrepancies in handling federal criminals. Sindh’s progressive approach to prisoner rights, attributed in part to political factors, was particularly highlighted.
The visit shed light on the interplay of law, governance, and politics in prison management. It concluded with insightful remarks, emphasizing the need for cohesive policies and systems to enhance correctional practices and contribute to societal improvement.
